Again I’m on another delirious rant about blogging.
The skills gained and enjoyment from it are just so outlandishly obvious now.
Those realizations combined with the direction society is headed has me thinking that everyone should start a blog. Because let’s be honest. Were moving towards a show-me-what-you’ve-done culture as a opposed to the traditional resume.
Furthermore, blogging has now surpassed all of my other interests to take it’s rightful spot at the top.
It’s become my most central focus because I enjoy it so much.
It combines writing, photography, design, marketing, social media, and problem solving.
Additionally, as more of an introverted person, it’s my preferred way to communicate with the world.
I feel like I can give you more of the real me here, because there’s not a big group of people listening to me speak.
I can escape the inside of my own head and take the time to articulate my thoughts.
What the hell would I have done before the internet? I’m not really sure.
I guess without the possibility of blogging there would always be dividend growth investing, basketball, and travel. But even those things would be more annoying without the internet.
How the gush about blogging started
This post was originally intended to be on the latest dividend income update, however, the grey matter in my head had other plans.
I sat down to write and all I could do was gush over blogging.
Admittedly, there were a few blog posts that helped to propel the mood.
One of these fantastic posts was titled (Real Estate Versus Blogging: Which Is A Better Investment?) from Financial Samurai.
And if you haven’t read this post yet, I strongly encourage you to do so, because it’s a damn good read!
Blogging is no joke
There are so many people out there that will never start because they simply don’t understand the potential in it.
[bctt tweet=”Reasons to Gush About Blogging” username=”reversethecrush”]
They’re unaware of the amount of time it takes to be successful or the effort that gets put in.
I always find it interesting to hear what non-bloggers think about blogging, because their opinions greatly vary.
Some people think it’s easy, they write a few posts, and think Adrianna Huffington is going to personally reach out to offer a lucrative writing deal.
No! That’s not how it works, bruh.
You have to understand that blogging is the same as everything else in this world. You get what you put in.
It’s the same as staying in school for years and knowing the payoff will be worth it.
It takes years to develop the right skill set in any profession, so why would blogging be any different?
On the other hand, there are people out there that would enjoy blogging, but they don’t believe in it enough.
Maybe you’re a quality writer, but due to an advanced age, you don’t really know much about blogging. To you, it may seem mythical to be able to earn a living from a blog.
Or maybe you’re like me and are somewhere between 6-to-12 months into your blogging journey, and are still trying to figure it all out.
Whatever stage you’re in, the purpose of this post is to serve as a reminder of why blogging is fucking awesome!
Here are reasons to gush about blogging.
The Internet Is Still In It’s Infancy
Did you know that this is the first year that 9/11 is being taught as a history lesson to kids in school? Some of these kids weren’t even born yet on the date of the disaster.
But do you remember what life was like back then? I sure do.
If my memory serves me correctly, I was in grade 10 business communications class at the time. And because my school was so close to the Darlington Nuclear power plant, they locked down the entire building.
I had no cell phone to get live updates. There was no Twitter, Pinterest, or Snapchat to get the reaction of others. I wasn’t able to communicate with my family.
All that happened was they rolled out one of those oversized, bubble-faced TV stands into the classroom and turned on CNN to watch the horror.
Look at how much things have changed since then. How much more are things going to change in the future?
If you stay current with the trends then you would know that working remotely is becoming more and more popular. The world as we know it is still going through a massive communication shift.
This shift continues to allow people to work more flexibly and even large corporations are beginning to adapt. Though they don’t have a choice, because if they fail to adjust, none of the top talent will ever want to work there.
There’s also a plethora of experts such as Seth Godin and Gary Vaynerchuk that believe the traditional resume is slowly dying.
It’s like I said near the beginning of the post, we are becoming more of a show-me-what-you-can-do society. Why not get ahead now?
Become Your Own Media Company
Although this point may not resonate with everyone, it’s such an awesome concept to me.
I studied Business Marketing during school and most of the advertising tools that are available now didn’t even exist back then.
They were teaching students how to write outdated business plans and how to make physical sales calls.
Studying Business Marketing in school is truly one of the most worthless educations that exist because of how fast the industry changes.
However, I also believe everyone should know about marketing, because it makes you aware of how business and advertising really works.
You become more cognizant of all the BS that’s tossed your way.
Being a 30 year old that’s seen the world before and after the internet, I’m truly grateful for the opportunity I now have.
Because years ago, not everyone had the ability to pick a niche topic and become a media company. But now anyone can start a brand and become an expert if they’re willing to put in the work.
Potential For Income
This one is a given and I’m pretty certain a lot of bloggers start for the sole purpose of generating an income.
But why not? It can be a lucrative side hustle or even a full time career if you want it to be.
However, I don’t think blogging should be done only for money. Just like anything else in life there’s gotta be more of a reason for doing it than that.
The primary reason for blogging should always be to help and engage with others. And also for the love of it.
Admittedly though, I am trying to make money from blogging. And I’ve had some success thus far.
But I’m only trying to make money from it because I love doing it so friggin’ much. I don’t even need to make a ton from it to be happy.
Frankly, earning a living by blogging is the ultimate dream.
Blogging Is Undervalued And Under Appreciated
The baby boomers neither get it nor appreciate it.
The big corporations are just starting to develop their own blogs.
And to the best of my knowledge, kids aren’t being taught in school that blogging could be a viable career.
A lot of people won’t even take your blog seriously until you’ve made it.
But once the money starts rolling in, that cynicism quickly turns into questions and support.
To further prove blogging is undervalued, I came across another post on Financial Samurai titled (Buying Blogs, Selling Blogs: How I Built My Blogging Business).
If you don’t believe me that blogging is grossly underrated then please read that.
Stay Technology Savvy
It’s so easy to stay up-to-date with tech when you’re a blogger.
Why? Because you need to be aware of websites, hosting, SEO, and social media platforms available.
You are constantly having to adapt to the latest WordPress update.
You’re always online working with computers, cameras, smart phones, and tablets.
My awakening to this concept comes from real experience, though. But, it was probably a result of my obsessive compulsive disorder.
I tend to get a little too into things. I usually try to turn things I’m passionate about into my all encompassing definite purpose.
And prior to writing this blog, dividend growth investing was my only purpose. I hardly cared about anything else.
But it was actually to my own detriment. Because that intense focus negated my interest in technology.
Document Life
I wanted to be financially independent so bad that I was willing to let other areas of my life slide.
But now, thanks to blogging, I’ve ceased from thinking like that.
Don’t get me wrong though, FI is important and all, but I’m really in the business of buying TIME.
And that’s why I think blogging is so cool. Because you actually get to document time.
Wouldn’t it be absolutely fascinating to blog for say, 20 years, and then go back through all your posts?
Thanks to people like Steve Jobs, we are the first generation that will have everything documented online.
Your future family could one day be reading about your journey and learning from you.
Think about that for a second.
That’s really fucking cool!
In my own life, I had a very successful grandfather that I never met. He was a real estate investor, salesman, and business owner that I never had the opportunity to learn from.
What if blogging had been around and he had written his thoughts on property investing? It would’ve been amazing to get a peak inside his mind.
Improve At Writing
Since beginning this blog around the end of November 2015, I’ve now written 155 posts including this one.
Don’t you think you’d improve at writing if you wrote 155 posts?
Writing will forever be important and is still a valuable skill.
How someone articulates their ideas in writing says so much about their thought process.
It can show depth, character, and attention to detail.
Fulfillment
I mentioned this point on the start-a-blog page and it’s worth mentioning again.
One of the best parts about blogging is the supportive community.
You get to engage, share, and learn with like-minded people.
You’ll receive comments that brighten up your day and actually help others.
I’ve received many client compliments during my career in finance, however, none of them have been as meaningful as the comments on this very blog.
It’s just so fulfilling to spend time creating something and have people take their own time to appreciate your work.
If you like writing, reading, social media, and tech then blogging is a win/win for you.
Question: What do you enjoy most about blogging? Any reasons that I missed? Has your blog improved your quality of life?
