Twitter is one of the fastest ways to gain awareness for your blog or business.
Even with just a small audience, it’s possible to run a profitable business.
Personally, I used Twitter to grow my blog to over 10,000 page views per month.
In turn, I was able to qualify for Monumetric, which is a display ad network that requires at least 10,000 page views per month to apply. Now, my blog earns monthly income from advertising. It’s mostly because I was able to drive traffic to my blog from Twitter.
I accomplished this with a Twitter audience of between 2,500 to 3,000 followers. As of April 2021, my Twitter audience has grown to over 3,380 followers.
Before I knew what I was doing with search engine optimization (SEO), Twitter was my key traffic driver.
Since it has been such a key component of my marketing strategy, and because I’ve been able to grow my audience to over 3,380 followers, I wanted to share how to get more followers on the platform.
In this post, I will show you how to get more followers on Twitter.
Since there are a lot of points to cover, I will jump right in.
How To Get More Followers On Twitter: 20 Strategies To Boost Your Audience
1. Tweet Frequently
To gain followers on Twitter, you must tweet frequently.
At the end of the day, you have to provide value to an audience or there is no reason to follow you.
Frankly, I won’t even follow a Twitter account that hasn’t tweeted in a few months. Why would I want to follow an account that doesn’t provide any value?
To grow an audience, I would recommend that you tweet at least 3 to 5 times per day.
2. Use Hashtags
Hashtags are an underrated tool that most people don’t use properly.
Simply put, hashtags help people find content.
People that don’t follow you on Twitter aren’t going to see your Tweets. But if you use hashtags, they might find you while they are searching for specific hashtags.
Furthermore, your tweets should include the most popular hashtags related to your content.
3. Follow Related Accounts
You are not going to grow a Twitter audience if no one knows about you.
So, to build awareness in your community, you must follow other Twitter accounts in your community.
By following other accounts in your community, you are letting other people know about your Twitter account.
Also worth noting, you should avoid following unrelated accounts because it could confuse your audience.
People that follow you should feel like they stumbled onto a goldmine. Essentially, you want the audience to find the content they are looking for.
To grow your Twitter followers, I would recommend that you try to follow at least one new account per day.
4. Search Hashtags To Like And Engage With
Another great tip to grow a Twitter audience is to search for hashtags to like and engage with.
For example, if you are a financial independence blogger, search for hashtags such as “#fire” and “#financialindependence.”
Basically, you want to find people who are talking about the same topics as you are.
When you find them, like and comment on their tweets.
If they find your comments to be valuable, they will likely follow you back. At the very least, you can create a conversation around the topic that will lead to more awareness for your Twitter account.
5. Only Share Relevant And Valuable Content
To gain followers on Twitter, you need to share relevant and valuable content.
If you run a financial independence blog, you should share content about financial independence, and that content should be valuable.
If you are tweeting about a bunch of different topics, it could be confusing for an audience to understand what you are about.
To put it bluntly, you want people to either love or despise your topic. You don’t want to appeal to everyone. It’s better to be obsessed over by a small audience that loves your topic than it is to be moderately liked by everyone.
6. Curate And Retweet Similar Content
Curating content on Twitter is a skill. It’s also a fantastic way to grow your Twitter following.
To grow your audience, especially if you don’t have much of your own content to share yet, you have to develop an eye for similar content.
If you learn how to spot content that fits in line with your brand, you can essentially tell your audience what you are about through other people’s content.
7. Promote Your Twitter Account On Other Channels
If you have other social media channels or a website, you should promote your Twitter account there to grow your audience.
This is a marketing tactic called cross-promotion.
For example, I include my social media accounts at the end of each blog post.
Additionally, you can shamelessly promote your Twitter account on other social media channels and ask for the follow.
8. Build Relationships With Promoters (Retweet And Support Them)
Twitter is a fantastic channel to meet like-minded people.
Once you meet them, you should support and build relationships with them. It’s networking for bloggers and websites.
Over the years, I have been fortunate to build relationships with some amazing people.
Because I took the time to support and build relationships with them, they share and retweet my content. I will continue to do the same for them.
9. Always Respond
No matter how big my Twitter audience or blog becomes, I will always try to respond to comments and thank people for sharing.
Admittedly, it takes a lot of time and it is getting more challenging, because it is something I have to do every single day now.
But I can remember back to when I had only a few hundred followers. When someone with thousands of followers supported me, it was a big deal.
As such, I try to respond to everyone who comments or shares my content.
I don’t care how big their audience is or who they are. If they took the time to support me, I will try to return the favour.
This is also a great relationship-building tactic.
10. Create An Inviting Twitter Bio
Your Twitter bio should explain who you are and what you are about.
It should be visually appealing and it should describe what you do in a short, simple sentence.
People need to know what your Twitter account is about in a split second.
They need to like what they see. Otherwise, they won’t follow you.
As someone that studied business marketing in school, I try to stay on brand.
But you can also take the more personal route and be successful too.
11. Utilize Hootsuite Or Social Media Management Platforms
Tweeting frequently is a lot of work.
It’s surprisingly time-consuming.
A good way to save time is to utilize social media management platforms such as Hootsuite.
This will allow you to schedule Tweets in advance, so you don’t have to be as active all day.
In turn, you will be able to free up time to work on blogging tasks with the highest return on investment.
Unfortunately, Hootsuite recently changed its policy. They used to allow users to schedule up to 30 social media posts for free. Now they only offer 5. Nevertheless, it still saves you time.
12. Optimize Your Tweets For Peak Times
Your tweets might get missed if you post them when everyone is working or sleeping.
As such, you should try to post tweets at peak times of the day.
If you tweet for long enough, you will get a feel for what the best times to tweet are.
You can also check Twitter analytics, Google Analytics, or social media management platforms to find out what the best times to tweet are.
13. Share Quotes
Everyone loves great quotes.
To put it bluntly, quotes are one of the easiest ways to share value on Twitter.
You don’t even have to think of something clever to say yourself.
So, share great quotes that fit your brand on Twitter to grow your audience.
You might be surprised at how effective they are.
14. Ask Questions
Admittedly, I don’t use this tactic a lot.
But that’s not because it doesn’t work well. It’s because I’m a shy introvert, and I’m more interested in ideas than I am in conversations.
With that said, asking questions is an excellent way to get feedback and to engage with an audience.
It can lead to new ideas for content, and it will allow your audience to participate.
15. Take Time To Craft Tweets (Add Context)
People on Twitter are smarter than you think.
If you just share Twitter links that lead to old content, or if you don’t put much effort into your tweets, people aren’t going to follow you. They will know you don’t care about them and that you just want them to visit their link so they can make money.
As such, you have to view each tweet as a separate piece of content. Each tweet is an individual microblog.
Don’t be lazy with your tweets and expect to grow an audience. You must make your tweets stand out. Otherwise, Twitter will know you are being lazy and they won’t follow you.
16. Jump On Relevant Trends
One of the reasons Twitter is the best social network is because it has live news.
Different news topics and hashtags are trending every day.
If there are topics that you can add value to, you should use them to grow your Twitter followers.
Simply visit Twitter’s trending section daily and look for topics that fit your brand or business.
Then, tweet about the topic using hashtags or engage with that audience.
17. Follow Friday
Back in the early days of Twitter, follow Friday was a big thing.
It seems to be less popular nowadays. But it can still be a great way to grow your followers.
Basically, follow Friday means you tweet a list of other Twitter accounts with the hashtags: #followfriday #ff.
Ideally, the Twitter accounts you tagged will retweet and like your tweet. In turn, their audience finds you and follows you.
18. Don’t Be Afraid Of Controversy
If you do it the right way, controversy can be a good thing.
Of course, you want to be respectful and not turn into an internet troll.
I used to be afraid of what people thought about my opinions. I still do, to an extent.
But one day, I just decided that I can’t keep worrying about what other people think.
To my surprise, a lot of my more controversial opinions, such as my thoughts on saving vs. paying off debt, receive more engagement than my less contrarian opinions.
As the saying goes, there’s no such thing as bad publicity.
19. Use Emojis
Whether you like them or not, emojis are part of how we communicate these days.
They are also an easy way to stand out on Twitter.
Furthermore, emojis add a level of expression to a tweet that can be hard to communicate with words.
So, start adding some emojis to your tweets and watch your followers grow.
20. Follow Less People Than How Many Follow You
You’ve probably heard someone tell you to dress for success, right?
A lot of financial advisors are broke and not very knowledgeable about investing, but people believe them because they are wearing a suit. Even though they are not successful, it looks like they are.
Well, it’s the same on social media—image matters.
If people visit your Twitter account and see that you follow 2,000 people but you only have 700 followers, it doesn’t look like you are an influencer or authority figure in the community.
To make it appear like you are an influencer or authority, you should follow less people on Twitter than how many people follow you.
If you have 100 followers, follow less than 100 people.
If you are currently following more people than how many follow you, go through who you are following and unfollow Twitter accounts that aren’t adding value, people that quit, and unrelated accounts.
