For new bloggers, the hardest part is often figuring out what to write about.
In my case, coming up with blog post ideas is the easiest part.
Since starting this blog in late 2015, I’ve written over 500 blog posts. 388 are published, and 163 are in draft mode.
So, I decided to share some of my tactics to come up with blog post ideas.
In this article, I will share how to generate blog ideas and show you 12 easy ways to come up with new blog posts.
Let’s get started.
How To Generate Blog Ideas
How To Generate Blog Ideas
1. Write Down Blog Post Ideas When They Come To You
Most bloggers start off writing about topics they have been wanting to talk about.
The ideas come from notes in their phone.
But then after they learn more about blogging, writing posts becomes more about writing for an audience rather than writing for yourself.
As such, they stop writing posts based on notes in their phone.
Personally, I still think noting down blog ideas is a great way to come up with new posts.
Once I’m ready to write a post, I already have a word or direction to do keyword research on.
In short, commit to writing down post ideas that come to you no matter where you are.
2. Create A List Of Keywords
In addition, create a document that tracks all the keywords you find.
This way, you will always have an ongoing list of keywords to write from.
Furthermore, you should break down the keywords into categories to make sure they fit in line with your blog.
As you continually find keywords and add data to this document, it will become a key part of your blog business plan.
3. Document Something You Enjoy
Another easy way to come up with post ideas is to document something you enjoy.
I mean, what you enjoy is what makes you unique. So, that’s the type of content that will set you apart.
It’s also an easy way to come up with content, because you can probably just add a few paragraphs to something you are doing already.
For example, I would be tracking my dividend income privately the same way I do publicly if I didn’t have a blog.
Find a hobby that you can document on your blog for content.
4. Write About What You Currently Do
Looking for something to write about?
What do you usually spend time on instead of writing?
Write about that.
Make it a monthly or weekly segment.
If you collect coins or sports cards, write about it.
If you are a gamer, find a way to write about it.
Just write about exactly what you do or are in the process of learning. It will help you improve at what you are doing, and it will give you more content for your blog or website.
5. Use SEO Tools To Find Keywords And Blog Ideas
At a certain point of your blogging career, you will come to rely on search engine optimization tools for blog post ideas.
Frankly, this is probably the best way to generate blog ideas.
In short, creating blog posts about topics people are searching for will lead to more engaged traffic.
It’s also a great way to come up with more ideas once you run out of your own.

6. Utilize Pinterest To Find Topics
Technically, Pinterest is a search engine, not a social media channel.
So they tell me…
At the very least, it has search engine-like capabilities.
Similar to Google, you can type the first few letters or words and it will show you topic ideas.
As it turns out, it’s an excellent way to come up with blog post ideas.
7. Have A Clear Direction On Your Blog Topic
Another way to come up with blog ideas more easily is to have a clear direction with your blog.
I probably should have included this point first.
Better late than never, though.
Essentially, if you don’t have a clear direction with your blog, it will become confusing.
It’s better to be knowledgeable about one or two topics than it is to be about everything.
Furthermore, having a clear direction makes it easier to decide what to write about.
8. Ask Your Audience On Social Media
If you already have an engaged audience on social media, you can ask them for ideas to write about.
On the plus side, it’s a unique way to connect with readers and build an audience that will continue to return to your website.
9. Search Hashtags On Social Media
If your blog topic is related to current affairs, you can search hashtags to find topics that are trending.
In my opinion, Twitter is the best tool to search for hashtags to find out what people are talking about.
But if depends on your audience and what social media channel they prefer.
10. Read Through Your Comments To Find Common Questions Readers Are Asking
Rather than focusing on acquiring new readers, why not focus on the readers that you already have?
Read through comments, emails, and social media engagement to find out what your readers want.
What questions are being asked?
Answer those questions.
11. Observe What Works For Other Blogs
Obviously, I am not suggesting that you copy other blogs. Please do not do that!
But you should be aware of other blogs in your niche, and you should get ideas from other blogs on how to improve.
Just make sure to do it your own way.
There are plenty of bloggers who I admire and respect that have similar content as mine.
I definitely learn from them and am inspired by them. But I write similar content from my own perspective and I only add value where I can add value.
12. Share What You Learn
Similar to documenting something you enjoy, you can document what you learn.
It will also ensure that you thoroughly understand the information you were trying to learn.
By reiterating the information in the form of a blog post, you will develop a more clear understanding of it.
Plus, it gives you another blog post to share with your audience.
How To Generate Blog Ideas — Final Thoughts
Becoming an expert at generating blog ideas requires a lot of practice.
But if you set your blog up right and use these guidelines, I have no doubt that you’ll have plenty of blog ideas to write about.
If you are struggling with how to generate blog post ideas, try documenting what you enjoy or writing about something you are already doing.
If you are a little more advanced, search social media hashtags or utilize search engine optimization tools.
No matter how advanced you get, though, don’t forget to always take notes when new blog ideas come to your head.
